EDUCATION

Education is the largest non-resdiential buildings segment in terms of construction dollars. The value of  school construction has risen steadily over the past several years, surpassing the $100-billion markin 2007. In addition to new schools for America's ever-growing population, aging school buildings continue to provide opportunities for modernization and replacement.

Market Size:
  • 99,000 public elementary and secondary schools in 13,900 school districts, plus 33,700 private K-12 schools and 4,200 colleges & universities – approximately 137,000 total schools.

MANUFACTURING

The U.S. Census Bureau's 2007 Economic Census lists 294,000 manufactjring establishments, which it defines as "plants, factories or mills." Despite a reduction of 16% fromthe 350,000 manufavturing establishments listed in the 2002 Economic Census and the economic recession of 2008-2009, this sector has enjoyed onsiderable growth in the value of construciton in recent years.

The Health Care sector has enjoyed ten years of growth that saw construction spending double from 1999 through 2008. The driving factors – an aging population, retirement of baby boomers and increased birth rates – will not change significantly in the next few years.

Representing 17% of all non-residential buildings and square footage, the Office Buildings sector ranks as the #1 category in terms of size and scope.

Thia category made a steady recovery after the devastation of 9/11/2001, posting double-digit growth in both 2006 and 2007. However, the declinging U.S. economy sent office buildign construction into a slide in 2009.
